Grounds of Hope is a poverty assistance project that serves “fair trade” coffee and goods to the community of McKinney, Texas.
Fair trade coffee is coffee bought directly from indigenous farmers in developing countries. By purchasing fair trade coffee, the consumer has the direct ability to support these farmers and give them a better quality of life.
Earning a fair price allows farmers to provide things like health care and educationn for their families. This empowered lifestyle gives farming families the ability to claim a better standard of life through trade, not aid.
In addition to fair trade coffee we will also sell other fair trade items such as jewelry, chocolate, art, etc.
To be considered a “fair trade” product, the following conditions must be met:
-
Fair Price: Indigenous farmers receive a fair market price for their goods.
-
Fair Environmental Practices: Harmful agrochemicals are prohibited. Fair trade farmers protect the land by inter-cropping plant species to protect and enrich the soil and prevent erosion.
-
Fair Labor Conditions: Forced labor of children and adults is strictly prohibited. Farmers practice safe working conditions at all times. All wages are fair.
-
Direct Trade: Direct business relations with the farmers, without the need of unnecessary middlemen.
